La filiera dello zucchero tra Rieti e Celano, un reportage tra contemporaneità e passato
Ultima Stagione è un reportage realizzato tra l’estate e l’autunno del 2005 sulla raccolta della barbabietola da zucchero nella Piana Reatina (Rieti) e sulla sua successiva lavorazione industriale presso lo stabilimento Sadam Abruzzo di Celano (L’Aquila). L’interesse del lavoro sta sia nella sua capacità di documentare per immagini una produzione tipica del settore alimentare italiano sia nel momento storico della sua realizzazione: l’ultima stagione, per l’appunto, di coltivazione, raccolta e trasformazione della barbabietola in zucchero. Il risultato è un reportage contemporaneo e al tempo stesso già storico, che più del narrare le fasi di una filiera produttiva del nostro tempo assume un valore di testimonianza. A monte di questa, in effetti, sta una storia ben più antica: l’epopea della prima industrializzazione reatina, una rivoluzione economico-produttiva e sociale avviata nel 1873 con l’accensione del primo zuccherificio italiano. Filippo Maria Gianfelice, precedentemente a Ultima Stagione, aveva già puntato l’obiettivo sul sito di questo storico impianto, dismesso nel 1973, realizzando un reportage poetico di archeologia industriale. Il futuro, in un’epoca di avventure industriali fallite come l’attuale, non potrà che continuare a sollevare in chi guarda una amara riflessione sulla crisi del capitalismo occidentale. The sugar industry through Rieti and Celano, a reportage between past and present
Ultima Stagione (literally meaning: Last Season) is a reportage realized in the summer and fall of 2005 on the sugar beet harvest in the Piana Reatina (Rieti) and the subsequent industrial processing at the Sadam Abruzzo plant in Celano (L’Aquila). The interest of the work lies both in its ability to report by images a typical production of the Italian food industry and in the historical moment of its realization: exactly the last season of growing, harvesting and processing of the sugar beet into sugar. The result is a contemporary reportage being also and already historical: more than relating the stages of a production chain of our time, it takes on the value of unrepeatable record. The work indeed finds its prime cause in a much older story: the epic of the Rieti first industrial growth, an economic, productive and social revolution that started in 1873 with the start up of the first sugar refinery ever established in Italy. Filippo Maria Gianfelice, before shooting Ultima Stagione, have already pointed his camera lens on the site of this historic factory, put out of service in 1973. The future, given this current age of failing industrial adventures, will for sure continue to raise in the viewer a bitter reflection on the ongoing crisis of the western capitalism. (trad.
